Precision fermentation is a form of fermentation using microorganisms like yeast, bacteria, or fungus that are customized to make specific proteins or other ingredients. effera™ and Glycare both utilize precision fermentation to produce their products. A number of products utilize fermentation; one of the most widely used is insulin which, similar to Glycare, utilizes a variation of e coli.

In the case of effera™
- In the case of effera™ yeast is used, a specific strain with high protein yields is used
- yeast is programmed with lactoferrin DNA. Thus the high yielding yeast becomes a factory for lactoferrin
- By programmed it means the yeast is made to have a specific makeup and when fermented it will produce lactoferrin
- Fermentation
- Yeast is cultured in industrial fermenters and fed a sugar source
- As the yeast is fermented it consumes the sugars and secretes proteins that are high in lactoferrin
- Once the protein is made, it is separated out from the yeast leaving behind proteins that are high in lactoferrin
- The resulting powder is roughly 85% protein, 10% minerals and 5% moisture
- Sugar that is fed to the yeast is not part of the finished product
